This is the course required by the State of Michigan for a CPL. At the end of this course you will receive a certificate which you can use to apply for your CPL with your county.
Personal Protection in the Home (CCW/CPL Course)
This course meets and exceeds the training requirement for Concealed Pistol License (CPL) applicants in Michigan (and most states). This course is designed to develop the students basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen’s right to self-defense.

Homestead Training – Firearms Orientation Class
Introduction to the basics of pistols for those who have considered checking out what it means to own a firearm, but who have never fired one before.
Is the thought of shooting a pistol a little intimidating? Have you contemplated owning a gun, but just don’t feel comfortable yet? Homestead Training offers a course specially designed for people who want to investigate firearms ownership and use, but who don’t yet own a gun. Let our team of professional, certified, family-oriented instructors take the fear and intimidation out of owning a gun. We recognize there are many who need to “break the ice” and handle a firearm in a safe environment first.
In this Firearms Orientation Class you will learn:
- Gun Safety Rules
- Safe Handling of pistols of all types
- Rules and Methods for Safe Storage
- Introduction to Firearms Laws of Michigan
- How to Purchase a Firearm
- Basic Shooting Techniques
- Handgun Selection
$80 $39 for 3-hour Firearms Orientation Class
Bonus: Take this course and get into the Personal Protection in the Home CPL Class for HALF OFF!
Firearms Orientation is a 3-4 hour introductory class which can include one hour of practical shooting exercises at the range. (Range Time is optional and costs $20 extra) BUT YOU DO NOT NEED TO SHOOT FOR THIS CLASS IF YOU DON’T WISH TO. Let us take the fear out of gun ownership. If you choose to shoot, Pistols are available for rent for $31 (includes ammo and range fee) at the range if you choose not to use one of ours. You do not need to own a gun to attend this class. You are not required to shoot to complete this orientation. At the end of course you may still not choose to own a firearm, but you will feel much more confident and safe with guns. We guarantee it.
Once you complete this course, you may wish to take the NRA Basic Pistol 8-hour Course or the NRA Personal Protection in the Home Course (which allows you to apply for a CCW in Michigan). Or you may wish to go further and get into one of our private advanced tactical classes or private lessons.
Basic Pistol
In Basic Pistol you will learn how to become confident handling, firing, and cleaning your pistol. This class focuses on helping you become SAFE with your pistol. Many people aren’t confident loading, unloading, and firing their pistol because they haven’t been trained properly. We will help you overcome these fears and become a responsible and safe firearm owner.
We offer classes as well as private lessons. Basic pistol is ideal for young shooters and novice shooters. We would be happy to offer classes to your church group, scout group (16 years and older), or ladies group. The Basic Pistol course runs $79 and takes just one day to complete. You will start in the classroom and end with some time at the range. In this class you will learn:
- Rules for Safe Gun Handling
- Identifying and Unloading Different Firearms
- Practical Exercises in Safe Gun Handling
- Types of Ammunition; Cleaning and Storage of Firearms

About Homestead Training
Unlike many firearms schools, we are not a male-only academy. We specialize in working with women and families who wish to learn about firearms. Our instructors are NRA Certified and a combination of civilian instructors, law enforcement, and military. We are experienced shooters and you’ll find us to be friendly and very family-oriented.
We are located in Warren, Michigan. We offer CCW also known as CPL classes which meet or exceed the minimum requirements to apply for a CCW in Michigan. Our approach to CPL classes and all our pistol instruction is thorough and common-sense. Tom Ouweleen is our lead CCW and Pistol Instructor. He is NRA certified and believes in teaching people to be comfortable with firearms and most of all SAFE. Consider becoming well-trained by attending one of our novice or advanced classes.
